Adding a TOTP#
This guide will show you an easy way to add a TOTP to your Bitwarden vault using the browser extension. You can also check out the official Bitwarden documentation if you need more help.
What is a TOTP?
If you do not know what TOTPs are, you can read more about what a TOTP is here.
Make sure you are actively setting up a TOTP on a website on your computer. When you get to the point where you need to scan a QR code, you are ready to start. It should look something like this (with the QR code fully visible):
Once you are here, click on the Bitwarden extension in your browser. You should already have a login for this website saved in your vault. If you do not, you will need to create one first.
Click edit on the login, and look for the section that says Authenticator Key (TOTP) or similar. Once you find it, click on the camera icon. Make sure the QR code is fully visible on your screen. This will fill in the key for you, and you should be good to save the login.
The website will probably ask you enter a code from your TOTP generator to confirm that it is working. So just copy the code from Bitwarden, and you should be good to go. Depending on where you are in the bitwarden extension you can either hit the clock icon or the copy icon next to the TOTP to quickly copy it.
At this point, you should be all set. Just make sure you follow through with the instructions on the website you are setting up the TOTP for.
